Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings are home in London when they receive a letter from France urging them to come to Merlinville to solve a pressing matter. The letter gives no details of the problem at hand but hints that there might be a need to travel to Santiago in South America. Poirot recognizes the urgency in the letter and hours later they are on a boat to France.
